Dorfabend

Language: German (Deutsch)

Der Schäfer mit den Schafen
Zieht durch die stillen Gassen ein,
Die Häuser wollen schlafen
Und dämmern schon und nicken ein.

Ich bin in diesen Mauern
Der einzige fremde Mann zur Stund,
Es trinkt mein Herz mit Trauern
Den Kelch der Sehnsucht bis zum Grund.

Wohin der Weg mich führet,
Hat überall ein Herd gebrannt;
Nur ich hab nie gespüret,
Was Heimat ist und Vaterland.

Evening in the village

Language: English after the German (Deutsch)

The shepherd with his sheep
Enters the quiet streets,
The houses wish to sleep
And doze already and nod off.

Within these town walls I am
The only stranger at this time,
With sorrow my heart drains
The goblet of yearning.

Whither my path led me,
Everywhere a hearth glowed;
Only I have never perceived
What home is and a fatherland.
