Le chant d'Euryclée
Language: French (Français)
Available translation(s): ENG

Eurycleia's song
Language: English  after the French (Français)
For you I weep, o grieving widow;
you had a husband both brave in combat
and wise in council;
Whosoever must enter your deserted marriage bed
will never be your equal, noble son of Laertes,
Ulysses, equal to the gods.
You leave Ithaca and her fertile fields
and this ancient chamber where
you would spin your wool
for a distant hearth.
Your new husband will no doubt be a villain,
mistreat you, and speak to you in a
harsh, domineering tone, as if your master.
