Spät, spät, so spät! Die Nacht ist schwarz und kalt! Spät, spät, so spät! Doch Einlaß wird uns bald. Zu spät, zu spät! Man läßt euch nicht mehr ein. Uns losch das Licht: wie ist es uns so leid; Hört er uns flehn, der Bräutigam verzeiht, Zu spät, zu spät! Man läßt euch nicht mehr ein. Kein Licht: so spät! Und kalt und schwarz die Nacht! O laß uns ein, daß uns das Licht auch lacht! Zu spät, zu spät! Man läßt euch nicht mehr ein. Der Bräut'gam ist voll Sanftmut, wenn man steht, O laß uns ein zum Fußkuß, wenn auch spät. Nein, nein, zu spät! Man läßt euch nicht mehr ein.
