La corona imperiale e la peonia rossa, devono avere subito una fattura, Mio padre e mia madre stanno da tempo nella fossa, perché questa solitaria fioritura? Zampilla la fontana e ancora racconta, dei bei momenti del tempo passato, nel sonno immersa sta lì seduta una donna, i suoi capelli le coprono il vestito. Nelle sue mani trattiene un liuto, e nel sonno sembra voglia parlare, a me il suo volto sembra già conosciuto -- Ma, zitto, vado oltre per non disturbare! E quando ormai sulla valle il buio è disceso, lei inizia a toccare dolcemente le corde, ne viene fuori un suono meraviglioso, che tutta la notte nel giardino si diffonde.

Ist's doch, als ob seltsam' Stimmen Durch die lauen Lüfte schwimmen; Wieder hat's der Wind genommen - Ach, mein Herz ist so beklommen! "Drüben liegt dein Schloß verfallen, Klagend in den öden Hallen Aus dem Grund der Wald mich grüßte - 's war, als ob ich sterben müßte." Alte Klänge blühend schreiten! Quando il mondo va a riposare, il mio desiderio, con le stelle, veglia; Nel fresco della notte mi sforzo di ascoltare, quello che, là sotto, l'onda lieve sussurra. "Da lontano mi trasportano i frangenti, che così tristi colpiscono la sponda, Sotto le sbarre della tua finestra, conosci ancora questo cavaliere, donna?" E' come se un vociare strano l'aria mite percorra di traverso; ma il vento lo porta di nuovo lontano, Ah, questo mio cuore, come è tanto oppresso! "Laggiù, lontano, il tuo castello giace diruto, Con un triste lamento nelle sale vuote, Dal profondo del bosco mi giunge un saluto, e mi sembra arrivata l'ora della morte" Sembra che rifiorisca un'antica melodia! Ricorda giorni scomparsi da tempo Mi sento ancora invadere dalla malinconia, e il mio cuore vorrebbe sciogliersi in pianto. "Lontano, di là dal bosco, brillano le spade, dove si combatte per il Sepolcro Santo: in quella direzione la mia nave procede, là tutto avrà compimento, tutto quanto!"
