La Peri Come felici avanzano gli spiriti beati fra il profumo dei fiori che mai appassiscono! Se anche sono miei i giardini di terra e di mare, e possa cogliere fiori anche qua e là fra le stelle: più di tutti è bello un fiorellino del cielo! Luminoso e puro risplende il lago del Kashmir con il riflesso delle sue isole di platani, e là scorrono ruscelli fra le sabbie dorate, Ma ahimè! Solo ai beati ciò è noto: una goccia di cielo è più di ogni altra cosa bella! Va', librati volando da stella a stella, da un astro a un altro ancora più luminoso, così lontano quanto il cielo stende la sua volta solare, accogli pure le gioie che le sfere ti offrono e fa' che durino per un tempo infinito: ma una sola ora del cielo è più bella di tutte.

E' fatta con oro e con gemme, ricolma di una bevanda che dà gocce di vita. Davvero desidera il cielo anche questo dono? Potrà mai il diamante di una corona rifulgere come i gradini del trono di Allah? E le gocce della bevanda che dà vita, cosa sono se paragonate alla grandezza dell' eternità!

Tenore solo Ma osserva, chi si avvicina furtiva verso il triste cespuglio, simile alla dea della salute, con guance rosee fresche di primavera! E' proprio lei, e scorge fra i raggi della luna, che lievi la illuminano, la sposa fedele che si avvicina. Ella abbraccia l'amato, preme il roseo suo volto al pallido volto di lui, bagna nel lago la sua chioma ondeggiante per dare frescura alla fronte di lui. Il giovane Tu qui? Allontanati! Un solo mio alito è portatore di morte!

Li veglia, intanto, la Peri e una luce lieve continua a rifulgere nello loro notte mortale, fino alla resurrezione delle loro anime.

Tenore solo Ascoltando da lontano quel canto, si libra più in alto la Peri; Porta il sospiro dell'amore più puro come dono alle porte dell'Eden. Forte le palpita il cuore, la Speranza le dice: Sarai presto vicina alle palme dell'Eden perché con un sorriso lo Spirito della Luce accoglierà, sulla soglia dell'Eden, il dono. Ma senti, dagli arbusti celesti nasce un suono cristallino di campanelle, lei ascolta quel suono diffondersi nell'aria balsamica, che soffia dal trono di Allah; vede scintillare i globi celesti che circondano il lago di luce, dove le anime trasfigurate bevono il primo sorso della gloria divina. Ma anche questa volta la Peri invano a sperato restano ancora chiuse le porte eterne e così le parla l'Angelo, addolorato lo sguardo: L'Angelo Non ancora! Fedele è stata la fanciulla, e la sua storia, resta scritta nel capo del Signore, e tante volte sarà letta dal Serafino; ma per te, o Peri, restano ancora chiuse le porte dell'Eden: assai più sacro dovrà essere il dono capace di schiudere le porte della luce!

Là sta un amuleto, sulla cui pietra risplende un segno, impresso da un lampo - e là vedo pure anche un foglio sul cui candore impresso risplende il sigillo del re Salomone; forse mi riveleranno dove mai sulla terra o nel mare è riposto il potere magico, il nobile dono che schiude l'Eden ai peccatori, forse il mio occhio sarà capace di leggervi, giù al tempio! Tenore solo Discende allora con lieta speranza, sorride il cielo con occhio benigno, e le arcate dorate della sera sono ancora schiuse verso occidente. E ora volando sulla valle di Baalbek, scorge un bambino che gioca e canta tra le rose selvatiche, roseo e spontaneo come le rose stesse. Presso il fanciullo, che stanco del gioco, sta a riposare sdraiato fra i fiori, ella vede scendere da un destriero accaldato un uomo esausto che subito, verso una fonte cinta di alte erbe, si china a bere, poi svelto volge il suo viso selvaggio verso il bel bimbo, che senza timore siede, sebbene non sia sia mai visto alla luce del giorno uno sguardo più selvaggio di questo, di aspetto terribile, orrendo miscuglio come nube di tempesta fatta di tenebre e fuoco, là alberga ogni vizio, vi stanno effigiate le malefatte compiute, le frodi, l'assassinio dell'ospite, la sposa tradita, in lettere di sangue stanno scritti su quel viso. Mezzo soprano solo Ma ascolta, il richiamo del Vespro alla preghiera, mentre il sole discende quietamente, fra i mille minareti della Siria, si diffonde ora, vibrando, nell'aria; il bimbo si leva dal letto di fiori che gli aveva fatto da guanciale e si inginocchia sul prato in fiore mentre con le sue pure labbra angeliche pronuncia il nome eterno di Dio; sembra, con le mani e il volto rivolti in alto verso il cielo vespertino, un angioletto, che quaggiù si è smarrito e va in cerca della sua dimora. Tenore solo con coro Ed ecco, in umile preghiera si inginocchia quell'uomo là accanto al bambino mentre un raggio di sole su entrambi, l'impuro ed il puro, si accende. E inni di gioia si libravano in cielo, perché a un'anima era stato concesso il perdono! Era ormai tramontato l'astro dorato, ed entrambi erano ancora in ginocchio, quando un raggio, il più puro e il più bello fra quanti mai visti da sole o da stelle, cadde su quelle lacrime.
