Il est deux génies qui te guident dans le chemin de la vie ; 
heureux si, réunis, ils se tiennent, secourables, à tes côtés. 
L’un, par ses jeux qui égayent, t’abrège le voyage : 
appuyé sur son bras, le sort et le devoir te deviennent plus légers. 
Avec de riants ébats, d’aimables entretiens, il t’accompagne jusqu’au bord du gouffre, 
où le mortel s’arréte en frémissant devant l’océan de l’éternité. 
Là, l’autre te reçoit, résolu, grave et silencieux ; 
de son bras de géant, il te porte par delà cet abîme. 
Ne te consacre jamais à un seul des deux : 
ne confie pas au premier ta dignité ; à l’autre, ton bonheur !
