Three Blake Settings

Song Cycle by Gary Bachlund (b. 1947)

Word count: 115

1. The sick rose [sung text checked 1 time]

O Rose, thou art sick!
The invisible worm
That flies in the night,
In the howling storm,

Has found out thy bed
Of crimson joy:
And his dark secret love
Does thy life destroy.

2. The lily [sung text checked 1 time]

The modest rose puts forth a thorn,
The humble sheep a threatening horn,
While the lily white shall in love delight,
Nor a thorn nor a threat stain her beauty bright.

3. Ah, Sunflower [sung text checked 1 time]

Ah, Sun-flower! weary of time,
Who countest the steps of the Sun;
Seeking after that sweet golden clime,
Where the traveller's journey is done:

Where the Youth pined away with desire,
And the pale Virgin shrouded in snow,
Arise from their graves and aspire
Where my Sun-flower wishes to go.
