Ein Haus bei Nacht durch Strauch und Baum Ein [Fenster leise schimmern]1 ließ, Und dort im unsichtbaren Raum Ein Flötenspieler stand und blies. Es war ein Lied so altbekannt, Es floß so gütig in die Nacht, Als wäre Heimat jedes Land, Als wäre jeder Weg vollbracht. Es war der Welt geheimer Sinn In seinem Atem offenbart, Und willig gab das Herz sich hin Und alle Zeit ward Gegenwart.

Eine Stimme singt in der Nacht, Nacht, die ihr bange macht, Singt ihre Angst, ihren Mut; Singen bezwingt die Nacht. Singen ist gut. Eine zweite hebt an und geht mit, Hält mit der andern Schritt, Gibt ihr Antwort und lacht, Weil zu zwein in der Nacht Singen ihr Freude macht. Dritte Stimme fällt ein, Tanzt und schreitet im Reihn Mit in der Nacht. Und die drei Werden zu Sternenschein Und Zauberei. Fangen sich, lassen sich, Meiden sich, fassen sich, Weil Singen in der Nacht Liebe weckt, Freude macht, Zaubern ein Sternenzelt, Drin eins das andre halt, Zeigen sich, verstecken sich, Trösten sich, necken sich... Nacht wär und Angst die Welt Ohne dich, ohne mich, ohne dich.

Ich liebe solche bunt beglänzte Nächte
Im Flackerlicht der Lampen, und ich flechte
Gern meiner Lieder fiebernd Rot darein.
Sieh, Liebste, wie sich dort die Jugend drängt
Im späten Tanz, und wie für uns allein
Der Sichelmond im Rauch der Fackeln hängt.
In solchen Nächten lauscht mein zitternd Herz
Mit Qual und Lust heimat und jugendwärts,
Und schlägt im Takt verliebter Melodien.
Mein Auge aber schaut den fremden Mond
Im Silberkahn auf sichern Wegen ziehen
Und ist wie er der Einsamkeit gewohnt.
Schau dort! Die heiße Menge wogt im Tanz
Und glüht vor Lust und wirft den Loderkranz
Der kurzen Freude jauchzend in die Lüfte.
Ist's doch, als spielte meine Jugend dort
Im süßen Rausch fremdländisch heißer Düfte
Das alte Spiel in neuen Tänzen fort.
