Des Berges Gipfel war erschwungen,
Der trotzig in die Tiefe schaut;
Natur, von deinem Reiz durchdrungen,
Wie schlug mein Herz so frei, so laut!
Behaglich streckte dort das Land sich
In Ebnen aus, weit, endlos weit,
Mit Türmen, Wald und Flur, und wand sich
Der Ströme Zier ums bunte Kleid;
Hier stieg es plötzlich und entschlossen
Empor, stets kühner himmelan,
Mit Eis und Schnee das Haupt umgossen,
Vertrat den Wolken ihre Bahn.
Bald hing mein Auge freudetrunken
Hier an den Felsen, schroff und wild;
Bald war die Seele still versunken
Dort in der Ferne Rätselbild.
Die dunkle Ferne sandte leise
Die Sehnsucht, ihre Schwester, mir,
Und rasch verfolgt ich meine Reise
Den Berg hinab, zu ihr, zu ihr:
Wie manchen Zauber mag es geben,
Den die Natur auch dort ersann;
Wie mancher Biedre mag dort leben,
Dem ich die Hand noch drücken kann!

Le sommet de la montagne fut atteint avec peine,
Lui qui regardait vers le bas avec défi ;
Nature, pénétré par ta beauté,
Comme mon cœur battait, libre et fort !
Le pays s'étalait agréablement
Dans la plaine, loin, infiniment loin,
Avec clochers, forêt et champs et se parait
Du charme des rivières en robes colorées ;
Ici s'élevait soudain vers le ciel,
Avec audace, toujours plus hardiment,
Sa tête recouverte de glace et de neige,
Défendant leur passage aux nuages.
Tantôt mon regard ivre de joie s'attardait
Ici, sur les rochers sauvages et escarpés,
Tantôt mon âme sereine plongeait
Là, dans le spectacle énigmatique du lointain.
Le lointain obscur envoya doucement
La nostalgie, sa sœur, vers moi,
Et je poursuivis vivement mon chemin,
Redescendant de la montagne, vers elle, vers elle :
Comme il y a de l'enchantement
Dans ce que la nature peut imaginer ici ;
Combien de braves gens peuvent vivre là,
À qui je peux encore serrer la main !
