[Schneeglöckchen]1 lacht und jubelt
Daß es so frühe lebt,
Nicht wenn das Laub, das falbe
Im Herbst zur Erde bebt.
Schneeglöckchen hängt das Köpfchen,
Daß es so frühe blüht,
Nicht wenn im Maienglanze
Die Ros' und Lilie glüht!
O Menschenherz, du Blume
Im Lenz der Jugendzeit --
Du liebst und brichst, und der Frühling,
Bleibt Dir so fern, so weit!

The little snowdrop laughs
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
The little snowdrop laughs and rejoices
That it lives so early,
Not when the leaves, the dun-coloured ones,
Tremble toward earth in the autumn.
The little snowdrop hangs its head
That it blooms so early,
Not when in the brightness of May
The rose and lily glow!
Oh human heart, you flower
In the springtime of youth --
You love and you break, and spring
Remains so distant, so far from you!
