A lame man, who is fond of wandering, limps Even over mountains and valleys; A hardened drunkard drinks once in a while Even when he is not thirsty. That limping rhymes with drinking Means that one comes from the other, For he whom wine has firmly glued in place Finds it hard to wander Istud vinum, bonum vinum [This wine, good wine], vinum generosum [a wine of character] reddit virum intestinum [makes a man strong inside,] fortem, animosum [courageous]. We had no thought yet of halting Our fast-paced steps, When someone stopped us with force At the tavern and wanted to come along. Now we are resting, now we are stuck And cannot get away, Unless beforehand we lift Him who lies there, with tankards. Istud vinum, bonum vinum [This wine, good wine], vinum generosum [a wine of character] reddit virum intestinum [makes a man strong inside,] fortem, animosum [courageous]. A godly barrel with hoops of steel, Filled up and well tended, For a long time already rests against the cellar wall, Where no buffet can move it. Wine, as clear as a flood of gold, Coloured dull by Father Rhine, Makes a drinker’s heart as merry As if Venus were beckoning to him. Istud vinum, bonum vinum [This wine, good wine], vinum generosum [a wine of character] reddit virum intestinum [makes a man strong inside,] fortem, animosum [courageous]. Pour full the largest goblet, Sit down upon the bench, And be quiet now, if I am to sample [the wine]! Forsooth, that is a drink! A young, fresh woman and old wine Shall not so easily be rebuked by me, But if I should say: contrive it Wrong! I would be lying. Istud vinum, bonum vinum [This wine, good wine], vinum generosum [a wine of character] reddit virum intestinum [makes a man strong inside,] fortem, animosum [courageous]. Everyone drink now, drink what you can, And pass it around to the right, Whoever has drunk up, starts again at the beginning, Sit privilegium [Let this be his a privilege]! The noble wine, the good wine, The wine of God’s benevolence, That is a wine, in it The soul in one’s body can bathe. Istud vinum, bonum vinum [This wine, good wine], vinum generosum [a wine of character] reddit virum intestinum [makes a man strong inside,] fortem, animosum [courageous].
