You mild breezes! Messengers from Italy, And you with your poplars, beloved river! You surging mountains! oh all you Sunny peaks, is it you again? You quiet place! to the yearning one, after days of hopelessness, You seem far away in dreams. And you my house, and you my old playfellows, Trees of the hills, you well-known ones! How long ago it is, oh how long ago! the peace of the child Is past, and past is youth and love and joy. But you my homeland, you holy -- You forbearing land, lo, you have remained. And therefore, because they suffer with you, with you Are happy, you, precious land! you also train your own And admonish them in dreams, when far from you They roam and stray, the faithless ones. And when in the ardent bosom the youth’s Arbitrary wishes are calmed And stand silent before fate, then The purified one offers himself up to you more gladly. Farewell then, days of youth, you rosy path Of love and all you pathways of the wanderer, Farewell, and you, oh heaven of my homeland, Take and bless my life again!
