Der Spielmann saß am Felsen Und blickte hinunter in's Meer Und sah die Wogen sich wälzen Und fluthen um sich her. Die Zither lag zur Seite, Die Luft war rein und mild; Und wie aus ferner Weite Kam ihm manch' liebes Bild. Kam auch der Schlummer treulich, Spielt’ um das Silberhaar Und schloß so still und heilig Das müde Augenpaar. Und mit dem Kreis der Träume Kam Jugendlust herauf; Und viel zerknickte Keime Blühten lebendig auf. Und alte schöne Stunden Wurden ihm wieder neu, Als hätt' er Liebchen gefunden Und Liebchen [wär’]1 ihm treu. Da faßt' ein plötzlich Grausen Ihn wie mit Sturmesweh'n, Und Wogen hört er brausen, Sah Liebchen untergeh'n.-- Und jetzt aus seinen Traümen Der Spielmann schnell erwacht, Und sieht die Wogen schäumen Und sieht der Wellen Nacht. Und hört die Winde pfeifen Und stürmen um sich her, [Thät]2 nach der Zither greifen, Fand keine Zither mehr. Die Zither schwimmt in den Wellen, Der Sturm riß sie hinab, Und seine Thränen quellen Bei seiner Liebsten Grab. Da wird's ihm, als ob sie riefe, Als klängen die Saiten an; Und er stürzt sich hinab in die Tiefe Und bricht durch die Wellen sich Bahn. Und von Weitem sieht er sie blinken Und kämpft sich zu ihr her, Und hält sie empor, dann versinken So Zither wie Spielmann in's Meer.

Le musicien était assis sur les rochers Et regardait la mer en bas Et il voyait les vagues rouler Et s'enfler autour de lui. La cithare était posée à son côté, L'air était pur et doux ; Et comme si d'une grande distance Maintes images chères lui apparaissaient. Le sommeil arriva aussi fidèlement Et joua autour de sa chevelure argentée ; Et ferma si calmement et d'une manière sacrée Ses yeux fatigués. Et avec le cercle de ses rêves La joie de la jeunesse resurgit ; Et de nombreux germes meurtris Fleurirent à nouveau à la vie. Et les belles heures anciennes Se renouvelèrent pour lui, Comme s'il avait retrouvé sa bien-aimée Et si sa bien-aimée lui était fidèle. Alors une horreur soudaine le saisit Comme avec le souffle d'une tempête, Et il entend les vagues rugir, Et voit sa bien-aimée couler. Et maintenant de ses rêves Le musicien s'éveille vite, Et voit les vagues écumer Et voit la nuit des vagues. Et il entendit les vents siffler Et rugir autour de lui. Il tenta de saisir sa cithare, Mais ne la trouva plus. La cithare flottait dans les vagues, La tempête la tirait vers le bas, Et ses larmes coulaient Près de la tombe de sa bien-aimée. Alors il lui sembla qu'elle l'appelait, Comme si les cordes résonnaient ; Et il plonge dans les profondeurs Et trace son chemin à travers les vagues. Et de loin il la voit briller Et il se bat vers elle, Et il la saisit, alors ils coulent, La cithare et le musicien dans la mer.
