Clasp hands in the bond of brotherhood, The day of freedom has dawned for us, May tyranny be forever annihilated, Blaze the way courageously for our rights! Yes, with a full heart, swear the oath To be true, ever true, to your country, May the coward be struck with eternal ignominy, He who could jest [while swearing] such oaths. Ye citizens, reach for your weapons! Range yourself in rank and file! Onward! onward! Rebel full of courage, rebel for the sake of your rights. We shall finally break our chains, Which have long ignominiously constrained us, Far too long we were in the dust, Bowed down before the stateliness of the princes. Now we are free and want to remain so, May every pressure be banished from us, And whoever threatens us with audacious hand, Yes, he shall be made to lose his enjoyment [of his threats]. Ye citizens, reach for your weapons! Range yourself in rank and file! Onward! onward! Rebel with courage, rebel for the sake of your homeland. Be on your guard against their nooses, Against humiliation and the pressure of despotism. Undeterred, become proficient in the use of weapons: Weapons are a manly adornment! And do not tolerate it that enslaved mercenaries, Armed, pertly travel through the country, Make them flee before your swords, For you battle in the protection of holy rights. Ye citizens, reach for your weapons! Range yourself in rank and file! Onward! onward! Rebel with courage, rebel for the sake of home and hearth. Tremble tyrants and you traitors, Who are the disgrace and dishonour of the Parties, Yes, tremble, for to punish you The day of vengeance shall soon dawn. Nothing can dampen our rage any longer; Where death mows down a victim, There a new hero quickly arises To fight your hordes with fresh vigour. Ye citizens, reach for your weapons! Range yourself in rank and file! Onward! onward! Rebel with courage, rebel for the sake of wife and child. Oh holy love for the homeland, We hold you fervently in our hearts; Our sanctuary, the love of freedom, Strengthens mightily the avenger’s arm. Oh stand by us in the holy battle, Remain ever united to our flag, And may our enemies in dying see Your glory and our victories. Ye citizens, reach for your weapons! Range yourself in rank and file! Onward! onward! Rebel mightily, your most precious possession is at stake! And where a son is slaughtered, There the father takes his place. In the bloody battle yet he shall be proud Of the renown of the dead one, For this renown he shall now inherit, The renown before the Fatherland, And with his sword in his hand, Exacting revenge, he shall die for it. Ye citizens, reach for your weapons! Range yourself in rank and file! Onward! onward! Rebel with courage, freedom’s victory is at stake!
