Ein wunderbares Rätselreich -- die Nacht!
Im weiten Himmelsgrunde
Sind funkelnde Sterne erwacht.
Und rings auf der finsteren Erde,
In stummer Ruh,
Schlossen tausend Soldaten
Müde Lider zu.
Noch flackert das Feuer der Wacht.
Ein Einsamer grüsst Dich,
Schweigende Nacht!

Beside the watch‑fire
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
A wondrous realm of mystery -- the night!
In the wide firmament of the heavens
Sparkling stars have awakened.
And round about on the dark earth,
In mute rest,
Thousands of soldiers closed
Their weary eyelids.
The watch-fire is still flickering.
A solitary one greets you,
Silent night!
