Hoch mit den Wolken geht der Vögel Reise,
Die Erde [schläfert]1, kaum noch Astern prangen,
Verstummt die Lieder, die so fröhlich klangen,
Und trüber Winter deckt die weiten Kreise.

Die Wanduhr pickt, im Zimmer singet leise
Waldvöglein noch, so du im Herbst gefangen.
Ein Bilderbuch scheint alles, was vergangen,
Du blätterst drin, geschützt vor Sturm und Eise.

So mild ist oft das Alter mir erschienen:
Wart nur, bald taut es von den Dächern wieder
Und über Nacht hat sich die Luft gewendet.

Ans Fenster klopft ein [Bot']2 mit frohen Mienen,
Du trittst erstaunt heraus -- und kehrst nicht wieder,
Denn endlich kommt der Lenz, der nimmer endet.

Le vieillard

Là-haut, avec les nuages, passe le chemin des oiseaux,
La terre est endormie, c'est à peine si les asters brillent encore,
Les chants se sont tus, eux qui retentissaient si gaiement,
Et un terne hiver couvre les étendues lointaines.

L'horloge fait tic-tac, dans la pièce chante encore doucement
Un oiseau de la forêt que tu as attrapé à l'automne.
Tout ce qui est passé ressemble à un livre d'images
Que tu feuillettes, à labri de la tempête et de la glace.

Le grand âge m'est souvent apparu si doux :
Attends un peu, bientôt le toit dégouttera à nouveau
Et en une nuit le vent aura tourné.

Un messager à la mine réjouie frappera à la fenêtre,
Tu sortiras étonné – et ne reviendras pas,
Car sera enfin arrivé le printemps qui n'a jamais de fin.
