Vom zukünftigen Brudermann
Language: German (Deutsch)
Available translation(s): ENG
Höret all' ihr braven Kinder!
Bald kommt noch ein Kindchen an.
Wollt' ein Schwesterchen ihr lieber,
Oder einen Brudermann,
Einen lieben Brudermann?
"Lieber hätt' ich eine Schwester!"
Ruft der kleine Gottfried aus.
In dem Korb allein das Hähnchen
Blieb der Gottfried gern im Haus.
Drum lasst mir den Bruder draus!
Aber Adelheid und Hannchen
Schreien beid: "ein Brüderlein!"
Kinderchen, hört auf zu zanken;
Sei's ein Knab', ein Mägdelein,
Soll es uns willkommen sein.
Note: Gottfried, Johanna (Hannchen), and Adelheid were the names of Johanna Kinkel's children. The expected child turned out to be a boy (Hermann).

About the coming little brother
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Listen, all you good children!
Soon another child will arrive.
Would you rather have a sister,
Or a brother,
A dear little brother?
"I would rather have a sister!"
Little Gottfried cries.
Gottfried would dearly like to remain
The only little rooster in the house.
Therefore keep a brother out of here!
But Adelheid and little Johanna
Both cry: "A little brother!"
Children, stop your quarreling;
Be it a boy, or [be it] a girl,
It shall be welcome to us.
