I know a maiden who gazed deeply Into the eyes of a curly-haired lad, And whether she was awake or whether she slept, She wanted to have him in her arms. She said: You took away my peace, I must bow my head in anxiety, For all my pondering and thinking is you And all my dreaming and longing. I know the lad as well, he grew up to be a man, He played and sang to a fiddle, And before the merry summer had run its course, The maiden became his own. She said: And when your arms encircle me, And you press me [to your bosom] again and again, It seems to me as if with its wings An angel flies down from heaven. There where the willow hangs over the brook They lay upon the moss, It was there that he embraced her fervently, A blooming, glowing rose. She pressed her trembling body to his In the intoxicating joys of love, She laughed, she wept, the blessed woman And would have thrown away her life for him. --, Betrayed the love, broken the faith, -- He left her and went off wandering And whistles and fiddles away his rue And kisses and cuddles with others. The rose is wilted, stripped of its petals, its leaves, The storm tore it from the enclosure, Broken and trampled, robbed of its scent, Thus I saw it lying beside the road.
