Soneu, cordes, en el repòs nocturn i porteu-me de la llunyania els somnis! Ja les sento ressonar amb un to ascendent; omplen les estances amb cants d’amor i bressolen l’ànim deprimit, portant-lo, a través d’un impetuós titubeig, a un devessall de tonalitats. Les que mai sonaren, per l’or o pels prínceps, són ara captives per un amarg salari i donen amb alegria, per un escàs guany i sofriments a bastança, el més preuat d’elles mateixes. Amb tot, les cançons també ensopeguen amb més d’un sorrut esguard, però retornen un altre cop vers llur mestressa. Oh, si pogués cantar la meta daurada, oh, si ho pogués aconseguir en el garbuix de la batalla! Endebades es troben la lira i l’espasa; no preuen els audaços ni tampoc els moderats. Jo donaria per amor de bon grat la vida, però sempre em roman ombrívol l’estel amic. Arriscar i guanyar! Alguns ho escrigueren a l’espasa; arriscar i desaparèixer! Només això m’ha estat ofert.
