Gingest irr im weiten Feld,
Ohne Wegeskunde,
Wo der Kobold neckend lauscht
In der Zauberrunde;
Gingest irr im dichten Forst,
Wo dich Zweig’ umschlingen,
Mädchen, trau dem Waldmann nicht,
Schlau legt er dir Schlingen;
Wassermann wie Jägersmann,
Siehst du grün sich tragen,
Und von Beiden trieft der Tau,
Wenn im Grün sie jagen;
Drum, o Maid, nicht rechts noch links
Wende deine Augen,
Geh gradaus—die Rosenbahn
Wird zum Heil dir taugen.

Doucement à travers la forêt verte retentit
Le chant des rossignols :
Celle qui quitte son fidèle
Est d'une beauté folle.
Jamais plus ne quitte ton fidèle ;
Si tu restais seule,
Le malheur pourrait facilement te frapper,
Et tu pourrais t'égarer.
Tu te perdrais dans les vastes champs,
Ne sachant quel chemin prendre,
Là où le gnome écoute malicieusement
Dans le cercle magique.
Tu te perdrais dans la forêt épaisse,
Là où les branches s'enroulent autour de toi,
Jeune fille, ne crois pas l'homme des bois,
Qui pose avec ruse sees pièges.
L'ondin, comme le chasseur,
Tu les vois habillés en vert,
Et la rosée goutte des deux
Quand ils chassent dans la verdure.
Donc, ô jeune fille, ni à droite, ni à gauche,
Ne tourne tes yeux,
Va tout droit -- le chemin des roses
