Ich stund an einem Morgen Heimlich an einem Ort Da hätt ich mich verborgen, Ich hört klägliche Wort Von einem Fräulein hübsch und fein, Das stund bei seinem Buhlen, es muß geschieden sein. Herzlieb, ich hab vernommen, Du wolltst von hinnen schier, Wenn willst du wiederkommen, Das sollst du sagen mir; So merk, Feinslieb, was ich dir sag, Mein Zukunft tust du fragen, Ich weiß weder Stund noch Tag. Das Fräulein weinet sehre, Ihr Herz war Kummers voll, Nun gib mir Weis und Lehre, Wie ich mich halten soll. Ich setz für dich, was ich vermag, Und willt du hie beleiben, Ich verzehr dich Jahr und Tag. Ik stond eens op een morgen Verscholen in een oord. Daar had ik mij verborgen, Ik hoord' een klaaglijk woord Van een jong meisje, vlot en fijn, Dat stond daar bij haar minnaar, Het moest een afscheid zijn. Mijn lief, ik heb vernomen Weggaan van hier wil jij, Wanneer je terug wilt komen, Dat moet je zeggen mij; Dus luister, lief, ik zeg je: ach, Wat 'k doen zal wil je weten, Maar 'k weet noch uur noch dag. Het meisje moest erg wenen, Vol zorg was haar gemoed: Nu laat mij wel vernemen, Hoe ik mij houden moet. Ik doe voor jou wat ik vermag, En als jij hier wilt blijven, Ik verzorg je jaar en dag. De jongen sprak heel moedig: Jouw wil is duid'lijk mij, Maar je goed zou op zijn spoedig, En een jaar is gauw voorbij, Dus moet dit toch een afscheid zijn, Ik wil je vriend'lijk vragen, Verdraag een jaar de pijn. Het meisje riep 'Dat 's moorden! 'k Zal sterven van verdriet, Mij pijnigen jouw woorden, O schat, verlaat mij niet. Voor jou laat 'k vallen goed en eer, En moest ik met je meegaan, Geen afstand schuwd' ik meer. De jongen sprak gedragen: Mijn schat, ik heb 't beloofd, Ik wil je vriend'lijk vragen: Zet dat toch uit je hoofd. Denk liever aan je vrienden fijn, Die jou geen onheil gunnen En daag'lijks bij je zijn.
