Dein Haus, [im]1 Waldgehege,
  Stand auf dem Hügel frei;
Ich, auf gewund'nem Stege,
  Zog hart daran vorbei.
Du gabst mit treuer Miene
  Mir meinen Gruß zurück,
Die wallende Gardine
  Entzog dich dann dem Blick.

Nun hat das reiche Leben,
  Das ringsum sich ergießt,
In deinem stillen Weben
  Den Punkt, in dem es schließt:
Du wirst die Beere pflücken,
  Die dort zur Reife drängt,
Dich wird die Rose schmücken,
  Die hier im Grünen hängt.

Und danke ich der Quelle,
  Die mir den Trunk gebracht,
Dank' ich so mancher Stelle
  Voll kühler Waldesnacht,
Dank' ich der Sonne willig
  Ihr herzerfreuend Licht,
So dank' ich dir auch billig
  Dein süßes Angesicht.

Je suis passé devant,
Peinant sur un chemin tortueux.
Tu m'as rendu mon salut
D'un air avenant,
En volant, les rideaux
Firent disparaître ton regard.

Maintenant la vie foisonnante
Répandue tout autour,
Trouve dans ce voile tranquille
Le point où elle s'arrête :
Tu cueilleras les baies
Qui là-bas se pressent de mûrir,
La rose t'ornera,
Elle qui pend là au buisson.

Et je remercie la source
Qui m'a donné à boire,
