et je la vis comme je peux ;
si je voulais me donner de la peine,
ça ne m’irait vraiment pas.

Je connais de bonnes vieilles chansons ;
dehors, dans le froid, sans chaussures,
je frotte mes cordes,
sans savoir où je dormirai le soir !

Il y a plus d’une belle qui me fait de l’oeil
pour me faire entendre que je lui plairais bien,
si seulement j’essayais d’être bon à quelque chose,
au lieu de n’être qu’un propre-à-rien. 

Dieu veuille te donner un mari
ayant maison et dépendances !
Si nous étions ensemble toi et moi,
mes chansons finiraient par se tarir.
