Mutter sagte: „Was hat sie so rot gemacht, mein Mädchen?“ Mädchen sagte: „Rosen habe ich gepflückt und die Hände an den Dornen mir zerstochen.“ Vom Liebsten kehrte sie erneut zurück, kommt mit roten Lippen. Mutter sagte: „Was hat sie so rot gemacht, mein Mädchen?“ Mädchen sagte ihr: „Himbeeren waren’s. Ihr Saft hat meine Lippen rot gemacht.“ Vom Liebsten kehrte sie erneut zurück, kommt mit fahlen Wangen. Mutter sagte: „Was hat dich so bleich gemacht, mein Mädchen?“ Mädchen sagte: „Richt mein Grab mir, Mutter! Birg mich dort und stell ein Kreuz darüber. Und auf dieses schreib, was ich dir sage: „Einst kam sie nach Haus mit roten Händen, sie wurden in des Liebsten Händen rot.
