Ich hab einmal in einem stillen Weiler,
der sich hoch oben zog den Berg entlang,
ein Lied gehört, das eine sanfte Mutter
dem sanften Schlummer ihres Kindes sang.
Wo sind die Berge meiner Jugend heute?
Was singt die Mutter heute ihrem Glück?
Ich weiß es nicht! Doch kehrt zu Zeiten
das ferne Lied mir in den Sinn zurück!

Once in a quiet hamlet, which on high
Strung itself along the mountain,
I heard a song, that a gentle mother
Sang to the gentle slumber of her child.
Where are the mountains of my youth today?
What does the mother sing today to her blessing?
I know it not! But from time to time
The distant song returns to my spirit!
