Qua si fa elmi di calici e spade,
e 'l sangue di Cristo si vend' a giumelle,
e croce e spine son lance e rotelle;
e pur da Cristo pazienza cade!
Ma non c'arivi più 'n queste contrade,
chè n'andré 'l sangue suo 'nsin alle stelle,
poscia che a Roma gli vendon la pelle;
e èci d'ogni ben chiuso le strade.
S' i' ebbi ma' voglia a posseder tesauro,
per ciò che qua opera da me è partita,
può quel nel manto che Medusa in Mauro.
Ma se alto in cielo è povertà gradita,
qual fia di nostro stato il gran restauro,
s' un altro segno amorza l'altra vita?

Aquí, dels calzes se’n fan elms i espases,
i la sang de Crist es ven a grapats,
la creu i les espines són llances i escuts
i, amb tot, la paciència de Crist s’acaba!
Però ell no hauria de tornar a aquestes contrades
i que la seva sang esquitxés les estrelles,
després que a Roma li venguin la pell
i a tota virtut barrin els camins.
Si mai jo volgués posseir tresors,
ara que aquí ja no hi ha treball per a mi,
el que porta mantell pot fer de mi el que Medusa feia a Mauritània.
Però si a dalt al cel la pobresa és benvinguda,
quin seria el gran restabliment de la nostra condició
si un altre senyal que el de la creu anul·la l’altra vida?
