Allgegenwart

Wo ich bin, fern und nah,
Stehen zwei Augen da,
Dunkelhell,
Blitzesschnell,
Schimmernd wie Felsenquell
Schattenumkränzt.
Wer in die Sonne sieht
Weiß es, wie mir geschieht;
Schließt er das Auge sein,
Schwarz und klein
Sieht er zwei Pünktelein
Übrall vor sich.
So auch mir immerdar
Zeigt sich dies Augenpaar,
Wachend in Busch und Feld,
Nachts wenn mich Schlaf befällt,
Nichts in der ganzen Welt
Hüllt mir es ein.
Gerne beschrieb' ich sie,
Doch ihr verstündet's nie:
Tag und Nacht,
Ernst, der lacht,
Wassers und Feuers Macht
Sind hier in eins gebracht,
Lächeln mich an.
Abends, wenn's dämmert noch,
Steig ich vier Treppen hoch,
Poch ans Tor,
Streckt sich ein Hälslein vor,
Wangen rund,
Purpurmund,
Nächtig Haar,
Stirne klar,
Drunter mein Augenpaar!

Ubiquity
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Wherever I am, near or far,
two eyes, there they are,
deeply bright,
quick as lightning,
shimmering like a mountain spring,
set in rich shadow.
Anyone who looks at the sun
knows what I see;
if he just shuts his eyes -
small and black,
two little dots,
he sees them everywhere.
So before me constantly
this pair of eyes appears,
wide awake in wood and field,
nightly when I fall asleep,
nothing in the whole world
conceals them from me.
Gladly would I describe them,
but you would never understand:
day and night,
earnest laughter,
power of water and fire,
all are united here,
smiling at me.
In the evening, before it is dark,
I climb four steps,
knock at the door,
a slim neck greets me,
cheeks so full,
wine-dark mouth,
raven hair,
brows so clear,
beneath them my pair of eyes!
