Minulla on palveluksessani kirjekyyhky, se on tosi nöyrä ja uskollinen: milloinkaan se ei jää matkalle eikä koskaan lennä ohi. Minä lähetän sen monta tuhatta kertaa tehtäviinsä päivittäin ohi monenkin rakkaan paikan rakkaimpani kotiin. Siellä se kurkistaa salaa sisään ikkunasta, vakoilee hänen katsettaan ja liikkeitään, kertoo terveiseni kuin leikin varjolla ja ottaa hänen viestinsä vastaan. Ei minun enää tarvitse kirjoitella kirjelappusia, annan kyyneleeni sen vietäväksi: voi, ei se niitä harhaan vie, tosi innokkaasti se palvelee minua. Olkoon päivä tai yö, olinpa unessa tai valveilla, se on sille samantekevää: kunhan se vain pääsee vaeltamaan, se tuntee itsensä ylettömän onnelliseksi. Koskaan se ei väsy eikä uuvu, tie on sille aina kuin uusi, ei sitä tarvitse houkutella, ei palkita, se kyyhkynen on minulle niin uskollinen ! Niinpä painan sen hellästi hoivaten rintaani vasten varmana sen tuottamasta voitosta; sen nimi on Kaipaus! Tunnetteko sen, uskollisen sielun airueen?
