Eldorado
Language: English
Gaily bedight,
A gallant knight,
In sunshine and in shadow,
Had journeyed long,
Singing a song,
In search of Eldorado.

But he grew old -
This knight so bold -
And o'er his heart a shadow
Fell as he found
No spot of ground
That looked like Eldorado.

And, as his strength
Failed him, at length,
He met a pilgrim shadow -
"Shadow," said he,
"Where can it be -
This land of Eldorado?"

"Over the Mountains
Of the Moon,
Down the Valley of the shadow,
Ride, boldly ride,"
The shade replied,
"If you seek for Eldorado!"

Mit hellem Sang
Language: German (Deutsch)  after the English
Mit hellem Sang
Die Tage lang,
Zog durch die schattenreichen Auen,
Durch Haideland,
Im Sonnenbrand,
Ein Ritter, um das Glück zu schauen.

Betrübt und matt,
Des Wanderns satt --
Sein Haar begann schon zu ergrauen --
Hatt' er nicht Weg,
Hatt' er nicht Steg
Gefunden, um das Glück zu schauen.

Als er erschlafft,
Gebeugt an Kraft,
Huscht' ihm ein Schatten vor die Brauen.
"O Schatten, sprich,
Wohin muß ich
Denn wandern, um das Glück zu schauen?"

" ' Im Monde, bleich,
Das Felsenreich,
Das Thal, wo Schatten nur und Grauen,
Durchziehe dann,
Du Rittersmann --
So wirst am Ende du das Glück erschauen . . . ' "
