An den Mond
Language: German (Deutsch)
Available translation(s): ENG
Sieh, da tritt der Mond hervor;
Bleich ist sein Gesicht, und melancholisch,
Wie getrennte Liebe.
Warlichsic, Mond, sie blickt dich an!
Denkt der Stunden heiliger Umarmung,
Und du weinst vor Mitleid!
Hell dich auf, und lach ihr zu!
Denn ich eil ihr, mit der Sonn', entgegen;
Lach, o Mond, ihr Trost zu!

To the moon
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
My soul does not live here!
It has wandered toward the dear one,
Who is now mine forever!
Oh breath of evening, tell me
(For you wafted about her with your pinions)
Where she now walks?
Her soul loves fervently, and loyally!
Do her eyes weep now that her lover is far away?
Tell me, breath of evening!
Lo, the moon appears now;
Pale is its visage, and melancholy,
Like love which cannot be with the beloved.
Truly, moon, she gazes at you!
Remembers the hours of holy embraces,
And you weep in pity!
Become more bright and smile at her!
For, with the sun, I hurry toward her;
Smile, oh moon, smile comfort upon her!
