. . An dieser Rose wird er mich erkennen.

How is it that I cannot forget him, That, awakening without my will, my thoughts Twine themselves only about this one, About this man in dreamy bliss? When he approaches me, how loudly my heart beats, And my cheeks, how they glow and burn! My soul rejoices in heavenly delight . . . By this rose he shall know me! I was a child. A peace, lovely and gentle, Lay in my heart like a youthful springtime And daily before the image of the Mother of God I forgot my little pains in prayer. Now it is different. I can never call myself happy And, then again, not call myself unhappy either; I still pray, but never ask me how? . . . By this rose he shall know me. He said: If today you wear a little red rose Upon your breast, it shall tell me That love blazes in your heart as well And that you are mine for all times. I wear the flower upon my silent breast And what my lips do not say or tell, All that the rose tells and says unwittingly . . . By this rose he shall know me.
