Wilde Rose

Wild rose
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
At the forest edge in the sloping meadow
My love stood beside a rosebush and sang.
Sang a song about a wild rose,
While holding a thorny twig in her lap.
"Thorns," she sang, "Thorns all around.
If love were only without thorns!
His lips are red roses,
His kisses bring thorny affliction!"
And she fell silent; thereupon I quietly went to her,
Said: "Forgive, my love, I eavesdropped!
Thorns, thorns! pay no heed to the thorns
When the blossom is bursting forth from the bud!"
