Lieb' ist schön wie Morgenröthe
Language: German (Deutsch)
Available translation(s): ENG
Lieb' ist schön wie [Morgenröthe]1,
Die den [dunkeln]2 Raum belebt!
Lieblich, wie des [Hirten]3 Flöte,
Die an sanfter Lippe schwebt!
Mächtig zieht Natur die Seele
Zu dem liebsten, zweiten Ich,
Aber heil'gere Befehle
Regen früh im Innern sich.
Weh' dem Herzen, das von Schimmer
Und von Glut der Liebe spricht,
Glüht in seinen Schlägen nimmer
Dankbar fromme Kindespflicht.
Eh' uns die gewalt'ge Liebe
Noch zu Lust und Schmerz bewegt,
Hat mit großmuthsvollen Triebe
Schon uns Aelterntreu gepflegt.
J. Lang sets stanzas 1-2

Love is as beautiful as the red of dawn
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Love is as beautiful as the red of dawn
That gives life to the dark world!
As lovely as the shepherd's flute
That hovers on soft lips!
Powerfully, nature draws the soul
To the most beloved, second self,
But holier commands
Stir early within our spirits.
Woe to the heart that speaks of the shimmer
And of the blaze of love,
In its throbbing never glow
The embers of grateful, pious filial duty.
Before mighty love yet moves us
To joy and to sorrow,
With magnanimous urges
Our parents' faithfulness has nurtured us.
