Musing on the roaring ocean
Language: Scottish (Scots)
Available translation(s): FRE
Musing on the roaring ocean,
Which divides my love and me,
 [Wearying]1 heaven in warm devotion
For his weal where'er he be:

 Hope and Fear's alternate billow
   Yielding late to Nature's law,
 [Whispering]2 spirits round my pillow,
Talk of him that 's far awa.

 Ye whom sorrow never wounded,
Ye who never shed a tear,
 Care-untroubled, joy-surrounded,
Gaudy day to you is dear.

Gentle night, do thou befriend me!
   Downy sleep, the curtain draw!
 Spirits kind, again attend me,
Talk of him that 's far awa!

Sníc u moře bouřlivého
Language: Czech (Čeština)  after the Scottish (Scots)
Sníc u moře bouřlivého,
   které dělí mne i jej,
modlím se za blaho jeho, —
   Bůh jej všude provázej!

Strach a naděj, vlna dvojí,
   šeptajících duchů rtem
mluví u postele mojí
   o něm, ach tak vzdáleném!

Vy, jež bolest nezranila,
   zrak jímž slzou nezrosen,
vy, jimž radost věnce vila,
vám buď milým slunný den. -

Ke mně, noci, sestup s výše,
   spusti závoj blahým snem,
hlasy duchův mluvte tiše
   o něm, ach tak vzdáleném!
