Zum Abschied

Nachtigall im Fliederstrauche,
Warum singst du denn nicht mehr?
Traf dich schon mit kaltem Hauche
Winterwind von Norden her?
Zwar der andern kleinen Sänger
Zwitschert noch so mancher drauss,
Doch willst du nicht singen länger,
Ist es mit dem Frühling aus!
Drum noch einmal, Holde, singe,
Eh' der rauhe Herbst uns schied,
Dass mir nach im Herzen klinge
Winterlang dein süsses Lied!

In farewell
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Nightingale in the lilac bush
Why do you no longer sing?
Did the winter wind from the north
Already strike you with its cold breath?
To be sure, some of the other
Little singers are still twittering outdoors,
But when you no longer wish to sing,
Springtime is over!
Therefore, lovely one, sing once more
Before harsh autumn separates us,
So that within my heart may echo
Your sweet song all winter long!
