Die Waldhorntöne verklingen

Die Waldhorntöne verklingen
In weiter Ferne bald,
Es sinken des Schlummers Schwingen
Hernieder auf den Wald.
Aus dunklen Blütenzweigen
Quillt es wie Liederklang,
Wie sehnsuchtseliges Niegen,
Wie jubelnder Liebesgesang.
Und durch der Drossel Lieder
Ist auch der Mond erwacht,
Der sendet grüßend hernieder
Silberne Stralenpracht [sic].
Mein einzig Licht und Leben,
O könntest du bei mir sein!
Dann wiegt' ich mit süßem Beben
An meinem Herzen dich ein.
Da solltest du ruhig träumen
Und leise säng' ich dir zu
Von Mondlicht, schlummernden Bäumen
Und seliger Waldesruh!--

Peace of the forest
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
The sounds of the bugle soon
Die away in the distance,
The pinions of slumber sink
Down upon the forest.
From the dark blossomy branches
It bubbles forth like the sound of songs,
Like blissfully yearning inclination,
Like rejoicing songs of love.
And at the songs of the thrush
The moon, too, has wakened;
As a greeting, [the moon] sends
A silvery splendour of light.
My only light and life,
Oh, if you could be with me!
Then, with sweet trembling, I would
Rock you to sleep upon my heart.
There you should dream peacefully,
And quietly I would sing to you
Of moonlight, slumbering trees
And blissful forest peace!--
