Solo To you is born today a savior, who is Christ, the Lord. Recitative: Mary was in Bethlehem, where she came to be taxed; the time came when she should bear a child, and she bore him. And when she had borne him and saw the boy naked and bare, she felt herself blessed, felt herself great, and, full of humility, took him on her lap and rejoiced in her heart about him, touched the tender, small boy with trembling and with blessings and wrapped him in swaddling clothes and put him to bed in a manger... there was no other place for him. Chorus: One whom the whole round world never contained, he lies in Mary’s lap, he has become a little child, he who upholds all things in life, Lord have mercy. Solo: God judges divinely, and not according to position and dignity. He leaves Herod with nothing along with his whole army, and shepherds in the field with their herds he chooses instead. Recitative: They sat there and guarded in the dark their herds with unconcerned, devout minds. Then stood before them, on the ground, an angel of God, approached them, and the Lord’s brightness surrounded them, and he said to them the truth. Lord have mercy! And hurriedly they stood up to go to Bethlehem; and came there and found, without any further understanding, Mary and Joseph both, and in the crib lay, to their great joy, in his swaddling cloths on leavings from the fields, the wonderfully beautiful boy. Chorus: A little child so praiseworthy is born to us today, from a virtuous virgin, to comfort us poor people. It is the Lord Christ our God, who will lead us out of all need, will be our savior himself, make us pure of all sin. Recitative: The Fathers hoped for him with tears and pleading, and longed to see the day of the Lord, and did not see it. What God was preparing, and was secret and hidden from the world, in the fulness of time became evident. The Wise Men fell down before him and gladly gave their gifts, gave incense, gold and myrrh. They saw his star, and knew their Savior, their Lord, and did not let the hay and straw mislead them. Chorus: He came to earth poor, so that he would have mercy on us, make us rich in Heaven and like his angels. Lord, have mercy! Solo: There he lies and sleeps, with his eyes shut! O, you merciful one! Come, all, around him and serve and pray to him. Recitative: Blessedly lovely, blessed boy, I pray to you from my heart. You know, that I have nothing and can give you nothing. I pray to you from my heart. I thank you on my knees, blessed boy! And I will for as long as I am and have this life, thank you, Lord! And when I am no longer, if God wills it, my ghost will still thank you in the grave. Finale: You are worthy to receive laud and praise and thanks and power and might and honor and glory forever and forever. Epilog: To a human being it seems miraculous, and not to be understood, yet, it’s really true! Und blessed are the eyes that see him.
