Es war ein König Milesint, Von dem will ich euch sagen: Der meuchelte sein Bruderskind, Wollte selbst die Krone tragen. Die Krönung ward mit Prangen Auf Liffey-Schloß begangen. O Irland! Irland! warest du so blind? Der König sitzt um Mitternacht Im leeren Marmorsaale, Sieht irr' in all die neue Pracht, Wie trunken von dem Mahle; Er spricht zu seinem Sohne: "Noch einmal bring die Krone! Doch schau, wer had die Pforten aufgemacht?" Da kommt ein seltsam Totenspiel, Ein Zug mit leisen Tritten, Vermummte Gäste groß and viel, Eine Krone schwankt in Mitten; Es drängt sich durch die Pforte Mit Flüstern ohne Worte; Dem Könige, dem wird so geisterschwül. Und aus der schwarzen Menge blickt Ein Kind mit frischer Wunde, Es lächelt sterbensweh and nickt, Es macht im Saal die Runde, Es trippelt zu dem Throne, Es reichet eine Krone Dem Könige, des Herze tief erschrickt. Darauf der Zug von dannen strich, Von Morgenluft berauschet, Die Kerzen flackern wunderlich, Der Mond am Fenster lauschet; Der Sohn mit Angst and Schweigen Zum Vater tät sich neigen, -- Er neiget über eine Leiche sich.

Il était un roi nommé Millesint Dont je veux vous parler : Il assassina le fils de son frère, Car il voulait la couronne pour lui même. Le couronnement fut célébré avec faste Au château de Liffey. Ô Irlande, Irlande ! étais-tu si aveugle ? À minuit le roi trône Dans la salle de marbre vide, Il regarde avec démence toute la nouvelle splendeur, Comme enivré par le festin; Il dit à son fils : «Apporte une fois encore la couronne ! Mais vois, qui a ouvert les portes ?» Alors entre un étrange jeu de mort, Un cortège aux pas légers, Des hôtes encagoulés, grands et nombreux, Une couronne vacille au milieu ; Ils se bousculent par la porte, Avec des chuchotements, sans un mot ; S'approchent du roi qui devient blanc comme un spectre. Et au milieu de la foule noire Regarde un enfant avec une fraîche blessure, Son sourire est une douleur mortelle et il fait un signe, Il fait le tour de la salle, Il trottine vers le trône, Il tend une couronne Au roi, dont le cœur est terrifié. Sur ce, le cortège s'efface, Enivré par l'air du matin, Les bougies vacillent bizarrement, La lune épie par la fenêtre, Le fils, muet et effrayé Se penche sur son père – Il se penche sur un cadavre.
