Ach, das war vor langen Jahren,
Eh' ich in die Welt gefahren,
Hoch im Sturm noch trieb mein Herz;
Aber stets bei ihrem Liede
Kam ein Friede
In des Jünglings Lust und Schmerz.
Grau jetzt, mit gedämpftem Feuer,
Einsam kehr' ich; die mir teuer,
Gingen alle fast zur Ruh';
Sie auch schläft, die süße Rose,
Unterm Moose,
Doch ihr Ebenbild bist du.
Singe, Kind, und in die blauen
Augen laß mich tief dir schauen!
Jugendheimwärts träumt mein Sinn,
Und von längst entschwundnen Lenzen

Qui sont pour moi des ailes
Dans le beau pays enchanté de la jeunesse !
Qu'elles s'enflent pleines et légères !
Enfant, ma mère autrefois
Chantait cette chanson.
Là-bas, elle était assise au piano
Lorsque la fraîcheur du soir
Pénétrait par la claire fenêtre;
Ses boucles étaient nimbées d'or
Et pareilles à des cloches
Flottaient les ondulations de son chant.
C'était hélas il y a de nombreuses années,
Avant que je parte en voyage.
J'en ai encore un grand émoi au cœur ;

Apportait la paix
