As Summer into Autumn slips
Language: English
Available translation(s): GER
As Summer into Autumn slips
And yet we sooner say
"The Summer" than "the Autumn," lest
We turn the sun away,
And almost count it an Affront
The presence to concede
Of one however lovely, not
The one that we have loved —
So we evade the charge of Years
On one attempting shy
The Circumvention of the Shaft
Of Life's Declivity.

Der Sommer stiehlt sich in den Herbst
Language: German (Deutsch)  after the English
Der Sommer stiehlt sich in den Herbst -
doch eher nennen wir
ihn „Sommer“ noch denn „Herbst“ - aus Furcht,
die Sonne zu verlier’n.
Empfinden es fast als Affront,
das Da-Sein zu gestehn,
von einem, der zwar lieb - doch den
wir nicht am liebsten sehn.
So meiden wir der Jahre Last,
indem wir scheu probiern,
des Lebens Schacht, der abwärts führt,
möglichst zu ignoriern.
