Heimweg vom Wirtshaus
Language: German (Deutsch)
Available translation(s): ENG FRE
Wunderliches Wehgefühl,
Wenn ich meinen Tisch verlassen
Und die Nacht so still und kühl
Wandelt durch die leeren Gassen!
Müde und vom Wein berauscht,
Hab ich oft dem bangen Winde
Durch die Straßen nachgelauscht,
Traumbewegt gleich einem Kinde.
Irgend ein geheimer Gruß,
Irgend ein geheimes Singen,
Irgend eine Liebe muß'
In dem leisen Brausen klingen.
Eine stille Güte auch
Hat der Ton in mir beschworen --
Ist es jener Jugend Hauch,
Die ich schon so lang verloren?

Way home from the tavern
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Strange feeling of pain,
When I have left my table
And the night, so quiet and cool,
Wanders through the empty streets!
Weary and befuddled by wine,
I have often listened to the anxious wind
As it passed through the streets,
Moved by dreams like a child.
Some sort of secret greeting,
Some sort of secret singing,
Some sort of love must
Ring in the quiet soughing.
A quiet goodness, too,
The tone has evoked within me --
Is it that breath of youth
That I already lost so long ago?
