Hüben hier und wieder drüben dort
Hält das Boot an manchem kleinen Port:
Bei der Schiffslaterne kargem Schein
Steigt ein Schatten aus und niemand ein.
Nur der Steurer noch, der wacht und steht!
Nur der Wind, der mir im Haare weht!
Schmerz und Lust erleiden sanften Tod.
Einen Schlummrer trägt das dunkle Boot.

Eind’lijk wordt mijn hete voorhoofd fris!
O, hoe heerlijk koel wordt nu mijn hart!
O, hoe zacht verstommen lust en smart!
Boven uit de pijp komt zwarte rook,
Wiegt en buigt zich in het windgespook.
Nu eens hier en dan ginds verderop
Houdt de boot in kleine havens stop;
Bij het karig licht der scheepslantaarn
Zie ‘k alleen een schim de boot afgaan.
Slechts de stuurman nog die waakt en staat,
Slechts de wind die door mijn haren gaat!
Pijn en hartstocht gaan nu zachtjes dood,
Slechts een slaper draagt de donk’re boot.
