Rosa
Language: Italian (Italiano)
Available translation(s): ENG
Una povera rosa è rinserrata
Nel tuo piccolo libro di preghiera:
Una povera rosa di brughiera
Che la lunga stagione ha disseccata.
Chi te l'ha dato quel mesto fiore?
Qual ti rammenta sogno gentil?
"Ahi," tu rispondi, "Fugge l'amore!
Fuggon le splendide sere d'april!"
Or muta la contempli, e, d'improvviso,
Ti si vela di pianto la pupilla:
Or, la baci, tremando, e disfavilla
Su la tua fronte, un vivido sorriso!

Rosa
Language: English  after the Italian (Italiano)
A poor rose is shut up
in your little prayer book,
a poor heath rose
that long passing time has dried up.
"Who gave you that sad flower?
What pleasant dream does it remind you of?"
"Ah," you answer, "Love passes quickly!
The splendid evenings of April pass quickly!"
Now you think about it, and suddenly
a tear veils your eye.
Then you kiss it, trembling, and there is shining
on your face a vivid smile!
