Im Mondgeflimmer,
im Zauberschimmer
führen die Elfen den Reigen;
fernher leise
fröhliche Weise
tönen klingende Geigen.
Zur Schenke hin
mit stürmenden Sinn
eilt der Forstmann durch nächtlichen Wald.
Im Dorf bei Tanz
und Kerzenglanz
jubelnde Freude erschallt.
Sehnsuchtsumstrickt
ein Mädchen blickt,
vom Tanze die Wangen so rot.
Ein bleich' Gesicht
im Mondenlicht
küssen die lachenden Elfen zu Tod.

Horrific episode
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
In the flicker of moonlight,
In the shimmer of magic
The elves dance the roundelay;
From far away, quietly,
A merry tune
Is played by resounding violins.
To the tavern
With a stormy spirit
The forester hastens through the nighttime woods.
In the village by dancing
And candle-glow
Rejoicing happiness rings out.
In the coils of yearning
A maiden gazes forth,
Her cheeks so red from the dance.
A pale face
In the moonlight,
The laughing elves kiss it to death.
