Ein Schifflein auf der Donau schwamm, Drin saßen Braut und Bräutigam, Er hüben und sie drüben. Sie sprach: Herzliebster, sage mir, Zum Angebind was geb ich dir? Sie streift zurück ihr Aermelein, Sie greift in's Wasser frisch hinein. Der Knabe, der thät gleich also, Und scherzt mit ihr und lacht so froh. Ach, schöne Frau Done, geb' sie mir Für meinen Schatz eine hübsche Zier! Sie zog heraus ein schönes Schwert, Der Knab' hätt' lang so eins begehrt. Der Knab', was hält er in der Hand? Milchweiß ein köstlich Perlenband. Er legt's ihr um ihr schwarzes Haar, Sie sah wie eine Fürstin gar. Ach, schöne Frau Done, geb' sie mir Für meinen Schatz eine hübsche Zier! Sie langt hinein zum andern Mal, Faßt einen Helm von lichtem Stahl. Der Knab' vor Freud' entsezt sich schier, Fischt ihr einen goldnen Kamm dafür. Zum Dritten sie in's Wasser griff: Ach weh! da fällt sie aus dem Schiff. Er springt ihr nach, er faßt sie keck, Frau Done reißt sie Beide weg; Frau Done hat ihr Schmuck gereut, Das büßt der Jüngling und die Maid. Das Schifflein leer hinunterwallt; Die Sonne sinkt hinter die Berge bald. Und als der Mond am Himmel stand, Die Liebchen schwimmen tot ans Land, Er hüben und sie drüben.

Un petit bateau naviguait sur le Danube, Dedans étaient assis la fiancée et le fiancé, Lui de ce côté-ci, elle de ce côté-là. Elle dit : mon cher cœur, dis-moi, Quel cadeau puis-je te donner ? Elle remonte sa petite manche, Elle trempe son bras dans l'eau. Le garçon fit aussitôt de même, Badine avec elle et rit gaiement. Ah, belle dame [Done]¹, donnez-moi Un joli bijou pour mon trésor ! Elle en sort une belle épée Que le garçon avait désiré depuis longtemps. Et le garçon, que tient-il dans sa main ? Un exquis ruban de perles blanches comme le lait. Il le pose sur sa noire chevelure, Elle ressemble tout à fait à une reine. Ah, belle dame [Done]¹, donnez-moi Un joli bijou pour mon trésor ! Elle le plonge une deuxième fois, Saisit un casque d'acier brillant. De joie le garçon, quasiment affolé, Lui pêche en retour un peigne d'or. La troisième fois elle attrape dans l'eau : Oh malheur ! elle tombe du bateau. Il saute après elle, il la saisit hardiment, Madame Done les entraîne tous les deux ; Madame Done regrette son bijou, Jeune homme et jeune fille doivent expier. Le petit bateau vide coule au fond ; Avant peu le soleil disparaît derrière la montagne. Et tandis que la lune luit dans le ciel, Les amoureux flottent morts vers la terre, Lui de ce côté-ci, elle de ce côté-là.
