You can help us modernize! The present website has been online for a very long time and we want to bring it up to date. As of April 17, we are $5,700 away from our goal of $15,000 to fund the project. The fully redesigned site will be better for mobile, easier to read and navigate, and ready for the next decade. Please give today to join dozens of other supporters in making this important renovation possible!

Daß du mein Auge wecktest zu diesem...

Language: German (Deutsch)

Daß du mein Auge wecktest zu diesem goldenen Lichte,
Daß mich dein Äther umfließt;
Daß ich zu deinem Äther
Hinauf einen Menschenblick richte,
Der ihn edler genießt;
Daß du einen unsterblichen Geist,
Der dich, Göttliche, denket und in die schlagende Brust,
Gütige, mir des Schmerzes wohlthät'ge Warnung
Geschenket und die belohnende Lust;
Daß du des Geistes Gedanken,
Des Herzens Gefühle zu tönen
Mir ein Saitenspiel gabst,
Kränze des Ruhms und das buhlende Glück
Deinen stolzeren Söhnen,
Mir ein Saitenspiel gabst;
Daß dem trunkenen Sinn,
von hoher Begeist’rung beflügelt,
Schöner das Leben sich malt,
Schöner in der Dichtung
Krystall die Wahrheit sich spiegelt,
Heller die dämmernde strahlt:
Große Göttin, dafür soll,
Bis die Parzen mich fodern,
Dieses Herzens Gefühl,
Zarter Kindlichkeit voll,
In dankbarem Strahle dir lodern,
Soll aus dem goldenen Spiel
Unerschöpflich dein Preis,
Erhabne Bildnerin, fließen,
Soll dieser denkende Geist
An dein mütterlich Herz
In reiner Umarmung sich schließen,
Bis der Tod sie zerreißt!

Dat u mijn ogen wekte voor deze...

Language: Dutch (Nederlands) after the German (Deutsch)

Dat u mijn ogen wekte voor deze helgouden lichten,
Dat mij uw ether omvloeit;
Dat ik ook tot uw ether
Omhoog mag een mensenblik richten,
Daardoor danig geboeid;
Dat u een onsterflijke geest,
Die u, godd’lijke, denkt zich en in het kloppende hart,
Goedige, mij van pijn hebt ’t heilzame teken
Gegeven en ook belonende lust;
Dat u, om diepe gedachten
En warme gevoelens te wekken,
Mij een snarenspel gaf,
Kransen van roem en verlokkend geluk
Aan uw trotsere zonen,
Mij een snarenspel gaf;
Dat mijn duiz’lende geest,
Door hogere geestdrift bevlogen,
Mooier het leven zich schetst,
Mooier in het dichtkunst-
kristal de waarheid zich spiegelt,
Lichter de scheem’rende straalt:
Grote godin, daarvoor zal,
Tot de Parcen mij halen,
Het gevoel van dit hart,
Zacht en kinderlijk lief,
Met dankbare straal voor u branden,
Zal uit de glanzende harp
Onuitputt’lijk uw lof,
Verheven lerares, stromen,
Zal deze denkende geest
Aan uw moederlijk hart
In reine omarming zich vlijen,
Tot de dood die verbreekt!
