You can help us modernize! The present website has been online for a very long time and we want to bring it up to date. As of May 6, we are $2,380 away from our goal of $15,000 to fund the project. The fully redesigned site will be better for mobile, easier to read and navigate, and ready for the next decade. Please give today to join dozens of other supporters in making this important overhaul possible!

Hirtenmägdlein auf der Wiese

Language: German (Deutsch) after the Spanish (Español)

Hirtenmägdlein auf der Wiese,
O du allerliebste Zier,
Tröst' dich Gott, du meine Seele,
Denn ich scheide nun von hier!

Scheide nun von dieser Halde,
Hirtenkind, mit meiner Heerde,
Nicht mehr siehst du mich im Walde
Hingestreckt auf grüner Erde,
Weil ich heut beraubet werde
Alter Wonnen, alter Nöthe,
Und das Lied auf meiner Flöte,
Ach, zum Seufzer wird es mir!

Muß im Feld mein Lager machen,
Muß mich betten in dem Schneee,
Glut von dürrem Ginster fachen,
Daß ich nicht vor Frost vergehe.
Mit dem dornigen Busch der Schlehe
Deck' ich mir zu Nacht die Glieder,
Und, bis daß es taget wieder,
Wein' ich, lieber Schatz, nach dir.

Weh'n zu scharf die Winterlüfte,
Geh' ich singend weite Strecken
Durch des Mondes Nebeldüfte,
Statt der Cither mit dem Stecken.
Was die Lieder dann entdecken,
Nur der Himmel wird es hören
Und die Vögel in den Föhren, -
Doch kein Laut gelangt zu dir.
