Die Traurigkeit entfaltet ihren Fächer, Beschattend alle Gegend weit und breit; Die Welt geht ein in große Müdigkeit, Der Wind steht still, der Tag wird immer schwächer. Und durch des himmels dämmernde Gemächer Sinkt leises Weiß herab. O, wie es schneit! Als bettete den Flügel ruhbereit der müde Schnee auf Straßen und auf Dächer. Kaum eine Stunde, und schon träumt den Traum Des Tods die stadt, gehüllt in bleichen Flaum, Der unaufhörlich lautlos niedertastet. Doch du, mein Herz, wie lang schon ist das her, Daß, wie der Marmor eines Grabes schwer, Auf dir die große stumme Kälte lastet?
