You can help us modernize! The present website has been online for a very long time and we want to bring it up to date. As of May 6, we are $2,380 away from our goal of $15,000 to fund the project. The fully redesigned site will be better for mobile, easier to read and navigate, and ready for the next decade. Please give today to join dozens of other supporters in making this important overhaul possible!

Die Männer sind mechant!

Language: German (Deutsch)

Du sagtest mir es, Mutter:
Er ist ein Springinsfeld!
Ich würd' es dir nicht glauben,
Bis ich mich krank gequält!
Ja, ja, nun ist er's wirklich;
Ich hatt' ihn nur verkannt!
Du sagtest mir's, o Mutter:
»Die Männer sind mechant!«

Vor'm Dorf im Busch, als gestern
Die stille Dämm'rung sank,
Da rauscht' es: »Guten Abend!«
Da rauscht' es: »Schönen Dank!«
Ich schlich hinzu, ich horchte;
Ich stand wie festgebannt:
Er war's mit einer Andern -
»Die Männer sind mechant!«

O Mutter, welche Qualen!
Es muß heraus, es muß! -
Es blieb nicht bloß beim Rauschen,
Es blieb nicht bloß beim Gruß!
Vom Gruße kam's zum Küsse,
Vom Kuß zum Druck der Hand,
Vom Druck, ach liebe Mutter! -
»Die Männer sind mechant!«

Note: Schubert received Seidl's poem in handwritten form. Seidl did not include it in his poetry editions.

Note: The Schubert complete editions (AGA and NGA) write the word méchant with e-acute, but it has originally been printed mechant and should be pronounced like that (not French) for the sake of the rhyme.

De mannen zijn een ramp

Language: Dutch (Nederlands) after the German (Deutsch)

Je zei het mij wel, moeder:
Hij is een wildebras!
Ik wou je niet geloven,
Tot 'k suf gepiekerd was!
Ja, ja, hij is het werk'lijk;
Mijn onschuld is verdampt!
Jij zei het mij, o moeder:
"De mannen zijn een ramp!"

In 't bos voor 't dorp, toen gister
De avondscheem'ring viel,
Daar klonk zacht: "Goedenavond!",
Daar klonk zacht: "Als u wil".
Ik sloop er heen, ik speurde,
Ik stond daar als verkrampt:
Hij was het, met een ander! -
De mannen zijn een ramp!

O moeder, wat een kwelling!
Ik moet het kwijt, het moet!
Het bleef niet slechts bij fluist'ren,
Het bleef niet bij een groet!
Van groeten kwam 't tot kussen,
Van kussen tot geklamp,
't Geklamp, ach lieve moeder! -
De mannen zijn een ramp!
