Es steht eine gold'ne Wiege am Fuß des Herrscherthrons, der Fürst beschaut die Züge des neugebornen Sohns. Rings an des Thrones Wänden, den Mund an Wünschen reich, stehn, nicht mit leeren Händen die Grossen in dem Reich. Frau Margareth die Holde bracht' ihr Geschenk nun dar: ein Kindlein war's von Golde gar künstlich wunderbar. Es ruht in des Kindes Händen von klarem Kristalle so fein ein Kelch voll schimmernder Spenden an Perlen und Edelgestein. Sie sprach: "O wahre immer den Kindersinn so rein, auf ird'schen Tand und Schimmer blickst du dann lächelnd drein!" Drauf trat der Wieg' entgegen von Bergen der Dynast. Er bracht' einen güldnen Degen, mit seidener Schärp' umfaßt: "Sei stark! dich schützend schwinge die Kraft ihr Schwert von Erz! Sei mild! die Mild' umschlinge als weiches Band dein Herz!" Dann trug zwei Himmelsgloben der Astronom herein, drauf Sonn' und Gestirn' erhoben aus Schmelz und buntem Gestein: "Nach oben schaue gerne, blick' oft zum Licht hinauf, dann nehmen wohl auch die Sterne einst deinen Namen auf." Es kam ein Prälat gegangen, der eine BIbel trug mit diamantenen Spangen und gold'nem Deckel und Bug: "Willst du in Schlummer dich neigen, das süßeste Kissen ist dies! Willst in dem Himmel du steigen, die beste Staffel ist dies!" Drauf nahte aheinz von Yssel, das war des Herzogs Narr, der bracht' auf grosser Schüssel einen kleinen Kirschkern dar: "Ein Samenkorn in der Erde, dir, Wiegekind, ist es gleich! Aus beiden kann noch was werden, die Keime ruhen in euch!" Er pflanzt' im Garten daneben den Keim gar sorgsam ein, das freilich konnt' er nicht geben, was ihm noch fehlt zum Gedeihn. Der Erde warmen Segen, Tauperlen spät und früh, und Sonnenschein und Regen, die kamen, man weiß nicht wie? Der Keim schoß auf zum Baume gar reich an Laub und Frucht, in dessen schattigem Raume der Waller Labung sucht. Das Kind, das die Wiege hüllte, ein Mann ward's, Fürst und Held: der fünfte Karol erfüllte mit seinem Namen die Welt.

C'è una culla d'oro ai piedi del trono del sovrano, il principe sta a guardare i cortei in onore del figlio appena nato. Intorno al trono, formulando tanti desideri, stanno, non a mani vuote i grandi del regno. Donna Margherita la Bella ha portato ora il suo dono: un Bambinello d'oro una meraviglia d'arte. Sta fra le mani del Bambino, di limpido e fine cristallo un calice pieno di splendide ricchezze, di perle e pietre preziose. Ella disse: "Oh, fosse sempre la tua mente, bambino, così pura, alle cose inutili e preziose della terra guarderesti sorridendo!" Quindi si avvicinò alla culla il dinasta di Bergen. Portava in dono una spada d'oro, avvolta in una sciarpa di seta: Sii forte! Per proteggerti brandisca la forza la sua spada di metallo! Sii buono! La bontà circondi come un morbido nastro il tuo cuore!" E venne con due globi celesti l'astronomo di corte, sui globi il sole e le stelle erano rappresentati con smalto e gemme colorate: "Guarda volentieri verso l'alto, volgi lo sguardo su verso la luce, ed anche le stelle prenderanno il tuo nome." E venne poi un prelato, che portava una Bibbia con fibbie di diamanti con copertina e cerniere d'oro: "Se ti vuoi addormentare, questo è il cuscino più dolce! Se vuoi salire al cielo, questo è il miglior gradino!" Poi venne Heinz von Yssel, il buffone del duca: portava in una grande coppa un piccolo nocciolo di ciliegia: "Un seme nella terra, a te, bimbo in culla, somiglia! Da entrambi verrà qualche cosa, la sostanza esiste già in voi!" Lui pianta nel giardino il seme, con gran cura, questo naturalmente non può dare ciò che ancora gli manca per crescere. La calda benedizione della terra, perle di rugiada la sera e il mattino, e luce del sole e pioggia, vengono, non si sa come. Il seme diventa un albero, ricco di foglie e di frutti, alla sua ombra il viandante cerca ristoro. Il bimbo che fu nella culla diventò uomo, principe ed eroe: Carlo Quinto riempì il mondo col suo nome.
